I Went
(after On Kawara)

Ink on Laser Prints in Two Three-Ring Binders, 8.5 x 11" (drawings), 11.5 x 12 x 3.5" (binders), 2010

From June 1, 1968 to September 17, 1979, On Kawara traced his path each day in red ink on a photocopied map of the city he was in. He stamped each map with the date and stored the drawings in three-ring binders. Eventually totalling 4740 pages, Kawara collectively titled these drawings I Went. I enacted my own verion of Kawara's project from January 1 - December 31, 2010. I spent most of 2010 living in New York City but took a few trips over the course of the year (pictured above, clockwise from top left, are maps from Paris, New York, Berlin, and Los Angeles). There is at least one map for every day of the year (two maps on the days when I traveled), a total of 387 drawings, housed in two binders similar to the ones used by Kawara.

I also produced a limited edition book featuring prints of 13 of the maps. Click here for more information.
