The first "Matthew Barney" Bootleg was produced on VHS tape. The video is a recording of the Cremaster 2 audio soundtrack with no video signal. The ideosyncracies of my VCR caused feedback during recording so the audio warbles in and out as the screen flashes at a pulse that is nearly impossible to watch.
Part of my interest in the Bootleg videos is that the buyer doesn't know what he or she is getting until they play the tape at home. For all they know it could be a blank tape. Whether the tapes play or not, they look good on the bookshelf and (potentially) have a certain value as sculpture.
In 2005, I created an updated version of this piece on DVD.
