Eric Doeringer Temporary Tattoos

Mixed Media, 7.5, 11, 14 x 4", 1998, Edition of 10

The Eric Doeringer Temporary Tattoos are temporary versions of my own tattoos (at least the ones I had when I made them).

Tattoos are generally seen as a sign of individuality but many tattoos are chosen from sheets of stock designs called "flash". A tattoo artist may put the same design on ten different people in one week. Temporary tattoos are even more generic -- skulls, snakes, hearts, and roses.

I was curious about whether people would put them on (transforming the piece from a static to a performative state) or save them as more traditional pieces of art. I also wondered what the experience of wearing someone else's tattoos would be like.
