Subway Paintings

I made these pieces shortly after moving to New York City. Living in Brooklyn, I spend a lot of time riding the trains.

The paintings appear to be pure abstractions (especially if you aren't from New York) but are actually exacting reproductions of various design elements from the New York MTA.

To me, these paintings are about more than just a study of the subway. The in-joke aspect of the images relates to the fact that I had just moved to New York City and was trying to break into the art world, which is very much an insiders' game. The flat color and hard edges are self-consious imitations of the style of painting which was (and is) the current art world vogue, as seen in the work of Monique Prieto, Kevin Appel, Ingrid Calame, Matthew Richie, and countless others.
