Pacific-36 is a painting based on a stretch of the subway near the apartment where I lived when I made these paintings. Three lines run parallel from Pacific St. to 36th St. The proportions of the painting are equivalent to the proportions of the three lines on the official MTA Subway Map.
With this piece (and several others in the series) I was interested in making paintings that look like art you have seen a million times before. It is only when one understands the conceptual foundation for the piece that it becomes something "fresh".
